Define the mandate
Clear criteria for the investment conversation
Preserve the mandate, the decision and the reason, so investment knowledge remains useful when people or priorities change.

The reason for a decision lives with one person.
Mandate exceptions are remembered differently.
A team change breaks the link to earlier diligence.
Inspect the source, review responsibility and required output at each stage of the process.
Retain the management-reported status of the figures until they have been verified.
Clear criteria for the investment conversation
A dated record of decisions and exceptions
Investment history available through a team handover
Retain the source, the investment rationale and the review decision. Keep subsequent updates separate from the original record.
Distinguish a pass on valuation from a mandate exception, concentration concern or evidence gap. Retain the source and decision date, together with any conditions for reconsideration. These distinctions help a future analyst assess whether the investment case has changed.
An introducer may connect an opportunity to an existing holding, co-investor or earlier committee discussion. Retain the source supporting that relationship and make its relevance explicit. Familiarity provides context for diligence; it does not establish the quality of the investment.
Retain the decision, supporting documents, unresolved questions and review owner in the investment record. A new team member should be able to reconstruct the case from those materials and understand the next action without relying on an informal recollection of the meeting.

Review a new opportunity against your mandate. See the supporting evidence, material risks and questions for diligence.
